Family Vacation 2015

This year, with the recommendation from several friends, we headed off to a new family beach destination as soon as Kari finished her last day of school.  So, off to Carolina Beach we went!  20 minutes from Wilmington, we were in the southern part of North Carolina, just a week before shark attacks made national news not too far from our beach.  A big surprise here was the intensity of the waves!  The kids had never seen waves taller than them and easily knocked them over.  Fortunately, it didn't stop them from getting in and enjoying the salty water.  We won't talk about Kevin's 2nd degree sunburn he acquired day one of the trip.

The rest of the time we spent poolside and checking out the local eateries.

Kevin prepared a great dinner at home after finding a local seafood shop.

Pop's ice cream across the street

The Dixie Grill-  an excellent diner in Wilmington!

Kate's Pancake House
Although we don't have any pictures, we also sampled and LOVED Britt's Donuts and Wake N Bake Donuts.  Kevin talked to the owner of Wake N Bake and discovered he was inspired by Voo Doo Donuts out in Portland, OR, which we experienced two summers ago.  I think we can officially say we're a donut lovin' family!

We took a couple of night walks on the beach with our flashlights.

We took a day trip to Wilmington to explore the USS Carolina Battleship.  What an experience to board a real navy battleship used in WW II and explore this miniature floating city.  Kari was most impressed with the medical and dental facilities.  She was surprised how nice and modern the dentist's office was compared to the seemingly paltry medical/surgical area.

This was the ship's version of a wishing well.  When the ship was in use, this was more of a galley elevator for supplies and ammunition, going down a total of three stories.  Now, people drop change down the chute and aim for a bucket in the center.  Kari was the only one to land in the bucket!

And this was pretty much how we survived the 14 hour drive there and back.  One dvd after another and fully charged batteries in the bluetooth headphones.  Ahhh, paradise for the adults sitting in the front seats!
